Artist Statement
This series shows my attempts to make an urn that’s worthy of holding my grandma Judy’s ashes. It's been years since she passed away, but she’s still stuck in the little plastic tube from the crematorium. The basis of the urn, two parts made to fit snugly together to create a complete lidded form, reflects the inextricable nature of our relationship. She was an avid collector of blue glassware, so each urn is glazed with the exact shade and finish of cobalt that she would be excited to find and add to her display. Through the variation of forms and accumulation of these attempts at perfection, this series conveys the futility of trying to create an urn that embodies the depth and complexity of the person it's holding.
