Progress Report: Forest for the Trees

Artist Statement

Throughout my time in residence, I’ve been grappling with the pressure to define my artistic voice – to put into words what makes my artwork distinctly mine. Forest for the Trees is a reflection on this process, conveying my experience of being able to identify recurring features of my practice, but struggling to find the words to clearly describe it as a whole.

I’ve created this body of work with the recognition that iteration on a singular form is central to my practice, as is a desire to create small, delicate pieces. This collection of teacups is decorated with asemic writing: a form of script that resembles handwriting, but is illegible. These indiscernible marks communicate the challenge of translation – the awareness that I am uniquely saying something through my work, but can’t seem to find the right words to explain myself.
